Werewolf syndrome (hypertrichosis, Adams syndrome) is a very rare inherited genetic disorder affecting approximately one in several million people. It is caused by a genetic mutation on the X chromosome, leading to excessive hair growth in its carriers.
Excessive hair growth is characteristic even in areas where hair does not normally grow in healthy individuals. A relatively recent example includes a family in India where three of six sisters were affected by this condition, inherited from their father.
Treatment:
Treatment consists of cosmetic removal of excessive hair using mechanical and chemical methods (various creams and topical products), laser hair removal (epilation/depilation), and permanent destruction of hair follicles using electric current with specialized needles (electrolysis). Psychological support and psychotherapy are also important.
