General
XYY syndrome (superman syndrome) is a relatively common genetic condition. It is caused by an abnormal number of sex chromosomes. Under normal circumstances, a male has two sex chromosomes—an X chromosome from the mother and a Y chromosome from the father. A male with XYY syndrome has an extra Y chromosome.
XYY syndrome is usually diagnosed incidentally during genetic testing performed for another reason, as it is often asymptomatic.
Diagnosis:
If XYY syndrome is suspected, cells (most commonly white blood cells) are collected and examined using genetic testing. A geneticist determines the number of chromosomes, which in this case is 47, including 1 X chromosome and 2 Y chromosomes.
Treatment:
This genetic disorder (like other chromosomal abnormalities) cannot be cured or prevented. Due to its asymptomatic or mild presentation, treatment is often not necessary. If needed, management is symptomatic—for example, learning difficulties may be addressed with specialized educational support and assessment.
