Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare disorder that affects the nervous system.
It is not a genetic disease, but an inflammatory disorder.
Its main characteristic feature is inflammatory involvement of peripheral nerves and nerve roots. The syndrome often occurs with infections, especially viral infections; it may also occur in cases of poisoning or nutritional disorders, and cases after vaccination have also been described.
Diagnosis
- lumbar puncture shows a high level of proteins
- EMG – abnormal nerve conduction
Treatment
If treatment is initiated immediately, the results are optimistic. The patient is placed in an intensive care unit, as their life may be threatened by respiratory arrest.
- mechanical ventilation in case of breathing disorders
- plasmapheresis – blood plasma is filtered and returned to the body
- rehabilitation
- paralysis / weakness of the limbs – symmetrical on the trunk, may spread to the face
- breathing difficulties
- difficulty swallowing
- increased heart rate
- palpitations
- incontinence
- sensory disturbances
