General
Gilbert syndrome is the most common form of benign hyperbilirubinemia (a non‑serious increase in bilirubin levels in the blood). It is an inherited condition that affects 5–10% of the population and occurs more frequently in males. The syndrome is usually discovered incidentally during examinations of adolescents, most often between the ages of 15 and 20.
Treatment:
Therapy is not necessary; in fact, it is discussed that Gilbert syndrome may have a protective effect against atherosclerosis, especially of the coronary (heart) arteries. The prognosis is favorable.
